best food ever

oh man, this weekend i made jook. also known as congee. which i believe translates (actually, i looked this up once and it's actually an indian name? anyway...) to rice gruel. which sounds boring and bland, but it's not, and i could probably eat this for a month straight. i'm very pleased how well it turned out, good as mom's. (3 cans chicken soup, 1.5 cans water, 1 cup rice, 1 ham bone. although i ended up removing 1 cup of liquid due to space limitations in my ikea cookware, and simmer for a long time until the rice magically expands! and the meat falls off the bone.)
i also made rice flour muffins from home baking, which came out quite well, if a bit oily, but i'm going to try to send them to my sister, so that's probably a good thing. i am hoping they'll survive the postal service though.

although i'm not supposed to have a lot of molasses

and in a quick jump to the future (or past?), the half of the pan of cornbread that was left was made into indian pudding yesterday. the past weekend a friend from chicago visited, so we ate out most of the time. went to my favorite (only one in ct?) thai restaurant and had duck curry and singha and fried ice cream, all of which were delicious.

i could back date things, but that seems like cheating?

on the 17th, i made cornbread to go with canned chili. i planned to have it for lunch, but ate most of it, so i made a sandwich (with the unfrozen homebaked white bread) instead.

more butter is probably needed. as usual.

been eating a lot of cranberry bread with brie, which is very satisfying, although probably not all that healthy for me.

today, however, i also had a grilled cheese sandwich (with that paragon of cheddar cheese, from tillamook, bought at traders joes) and made some very good mapo tofu.

also made "light as air spirals" from home baking, which was wheatless and used cornstarch instead. these were...very odd. not what i was expecting, but seemingly very edible.

the dating gets confusing... but this is for 1/14

made bread from home baking "helen's special raisin bread" which i used dried cranberries instead for one of the loaves, but turned out remarkably well.

i had pasta for dinner, if we care. (bertolli vivdalia onion sauce, which wasn't bad, but had a very strange aftertaste.)

and, since i turned in a grad school app, opened a bottle of wine and drank about half and decided i should probably stick to beer and maybe white wine, although this shiraz wasn't bad. but it's weird to drink a lot of red wine. (this reminds me of the time that i played scrabble in a bathroom while waiting for a friend to stop sleeping on the floor due to trying to drink an entire bottle of red wine.)

fascinating, no?

made tofu and broccoli in black bean/soy sauce.

then, realizing i had marshmallows, red berry special k marshmallow treats. after picking out most of the dried strawberries (of which there were many).

finally finished the curry, which was getting gross.

picking at chocolate covered ginger (from christmas) and crackers with tribe red bell pepper hummus through this week also.

made fried rice for dinner and tomorrow's lunch. adding soy sauce while cooking helped, as did broccoli, cooked only by stir fry, not blanching it first. the chicken might have helped also.

if you knew what october was like, you wouldn't use your microwave either

there was nothing monday because monday was boring. although i did drink a lot of hot water and tea and started up on my annual cough drop addiction. and i slept.

tuesday was also boring (still eating curry and bran muffins...) but i did use my microwave for the first time in, um...3+ months. it might take a while for me to start using it regularly, but the ease! and the speed! and the thorough heating!

now with links!

so, i notably made bran muffins from home baking

and then made chicken-potato-onion madras curry using a spice mix

(and yes, there were rolls and the last of the leftover pizza and the last caramel cookie.)

saturdays are sort of overrated

roll with pb+j (there were 12 rolls, ok? but they were only $1.)

pizza

pizza

lots of tea

packaged pho bo

potato+egg+cheese

um, other stuff? i think i'm going to revise this blog so that i only write about notable things i eat or drink. otherwise, it's sort of a chore. or maybe it's just that i don't want to think about how i constantly eat on the weekends.

mm, weekend angst

waffle with pb+j

banana, vanilla yogurt, leftover pizza thing.

tomato soup with half a cheese calzone

inari crackers

then i took a nap and woke up at 10:30 at night and ate a roll with a scrambled egg.

i wasn't really going for authenticity

life vanillla yogurt crunch cereal and milk (really, it's pretty much just life cereal. i feel sort of ripped off, but i think it was on sale or cheaper or something)

leftover pasta and an apple

i went running after work! (not food related, but pretty notable nonetheless. i'll probably never do it again.)

granola bar

made strange mushroom and bell pepper pizza and calzones.

it's repetitive now, but in a few years i'll be able to do a major statistical analysis on everything and find fascinating correlations and patterns

vanilla yogurt and roll with pb+j

shepherd's pie and an apple

tomato soup+roll+cheese

pasta+beer

Tuesday, January 03, 2006

making lists is a valid form of expression, right?

rolls with cheese and pb+j, tea

coffee

shepherd's pie and an apple

men's pocky

shepherd's pie (almost done)

several cups of tea, more caramel cookies, a roll with butter, a spoonful of ice cream

is this getting boring? and fairly repetitive? maybe this should be weekly. also, i eat too little too much.

Monday, January 02, 2006

also, those caramel cookies

frozen waffle with pb+j, tea

tomato soup and rolls and cheese

made shepherd's pie

i don't really enjoy travelling

jai (monk's food) and tea with tong guo at midnight

vanilla (yet unsweetened!) yogurt and angel food cake

granola bar, orange juice, fig newton (leg #1)

spinach and feta in puff pastry, orange juice, angel food cake (mdw)

granola bar, chex mix, bloody mary mix (leg #2)

caramel cookies, duck-flavored ramen
